random thoughts on random itunes tracks.

I’m listening to my iTunes library while working, and the current album is one by Leonard Cohen…”Songs To Kill Yourself By”, or something like that.

Did that guy ever write a cheerful song in his life?

Of course, there is the possibility that all his music is an expression of his cheerful side, and that he saves the dark stuff for other art forms.

Leonard Cohen has this one song called “Closing Time,” which I could listen to on repeat for hours…it’s that good. The lyrics are typically dark but rhythmically it makes for quite the infectious ear worm. I recommend it.

I’m pretty much the same way with Everybody Knows, Erica. I have no idea why. I have a sudden urge to re-write childrens’ songs in the Cohen style…. *chortle* Not that “Ring-a-ring o’roses” isn’t bloody grim when you know the context, anyway.

I’m shying away from setting my iPhone to “Shuffle” at the moment. I’ve had an irrational fear that I’ll own-goal rick-roll myself with some hidden, mis-labelled copy of “Never Gonna Give You Up” in my collection somewhere.

  3. I just can’t do the “random” thing for my iTunes library. With my particular music selections, it’s TOO random.

Edith Piaf > Faith No More > Verdi > ZZ Top > Random Audiobook > Breeders > Johnny Cash > Django Reinhardt….

I think my head would asplode.

I had mine on shuffle the day of my PhD orals. After “Night on Bald Mountain” and “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” I turned the thing off.

you should get some B-52’s in your ipod. There is some fun upbeat music. Cosmic Thing, Love Shack, Rock Lobster, Planet Claire, Hot Pants…stay away from that depressing stuff, life is too short.

Hallelujah and Suzanne do not seem depressing to me, but I even like “Hurt” by Johnny Cash.

Planet Claire is also a good song, nice, upbeat, good for working out. :-)
