big brother, squared.

Interesting little piece of literature-related trivia:

Erich Mielke, the head of the East German Stasi (State Security), was apparently both well-read, and fully aware of his place in the big picture, morally speaking.

He had the rooms of the Stasi headquarters in East Berlin renumbered.  His office was on the second floor, and had a room number starting with 2, so he had the entire first floor renamed the Mezzanine, to make his second-floor office Room 101.

I don’t get it – was this a paranoia thing or a self-importance thing or a propaganda thing?

Fodder: Room 101 was where political prisoners were threatened with their own worst fears as a form of torture in Orwell’s novel, “1984”.

  4. Eric says:

Room 101 was also Neo’s room in The Matrix.
